Former assistant solo and solo viola of the Barcelona Symphony Orchestra (Spain), solo viola of the Tchaikovsky Chamber Orchestra (Soviet Emigre Orchestra of New York), and principal viola of the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra (Israel) ERIQ KOONTZ has appeared in numerous concerts of solo and chamber music repertoire in the United States, Canada, Europe and Israel.
Koontz holds degrees from the Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and Yale University, where his principal teachers and mentors were Donald McInnes, Jesse Levine, Msao Kawasaki, Syoko Aki, the LaSalle Quartet and the Tokyo Quartet. Koontz formed part of the Fields Quartet, with whom he received the first Tanglewood Institute Chamber Music Fellowship in 1988. At
present he is finishing work toward the Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro under the guidance of Dr. Scott Rawls.
As a chamber and symphonic violist, Koontz has recorded with the RCA, EMI, Ars Harmonica, Columna, Koch, and Decca labels. He performed as viola soloist in the Spanish premiere of Max Bruch's "Double Concerto for Viola and Clarinet" in Barcelona in January, 2000. Koontz co-founded the chamber ensembles Reinecke Trio, Nayades Trio, and the Glinka String Quartet in Barcelona, as well as performing in the Kibbutz Festival for new music in Israel. In January 2006, he appeared in the Greensboro Symphony Chamber series, performing with violinist Dmitry Sitkovetsky and ‘‘cellist Gary Hoffman.
Koontz joined the faculty of the Hayes School of Music at Appalachian State University in August 2005. He is a native of Asheville, North Carolina.
